March Madness....It's in full swing!
March Madness...it's in full swing! Starts today. I always thought it was about buying ski gear at cheaper prices....hmm,..obviously not. I have been enlightened about what March Madness really means:
"MardiGras" or "Fat Tuesday:" Many Cajuns in Southwest Louisiana, Creoles in New Orleans and tourists in America will take this opportunity to laissez le bon temps roulez, translated, let the good times roll. "MardiGras" is a "last chance" celebration before the six weeks of the Lenten abstinence....during which Christians traditionally give up eating meat...at least on Fridays. It's common to forgo the consummation of a favorite food, beverage, or habit during Lent.
"St. Patrick's Day" or "Luck of the Irish" typically follows "MardiGras'" / "Fat Tuesday" and falls on "Thank God It's Thursday!" I personally believe that this was set up as a"saving grace" to help the "meat eaters" to get through the abstinence period; this year it's falls on Thursday, March 17th. It originated as a Catholic Holiday and became and an official feast day in the early 17th century. It has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Irish culture. And BTW, did you know that instead of corned beef and cabbage, that was.more of an American adoption, it originally was Lamb and Cabbage....imagine that..March Madness,,,It's in full swing!
